The 2023 report gives 73% for all 17,362 initial exams and does not label it first-time. In 2025 first-time pass rates were 88% for DNP, 80% for master’s and 77% for post-graduate certificate graduates. | AANPCB [1][2][3] | |
| Pass standard | A cut score set by standard setting; NPCB does not report scores as a percentageThe current handbook prints no scale. The 2023 handbook described a scaled score of 200–800 with 500 to pass. | NPCB [4] | |

What NPCB reported, 2023 to 2025
- 2023: 73% of initial exams. That report does not separate first attempts, so it is not a like-for-like comparison.
- 2024: 83%, first-time candidates.
- 2025: 81%, first-time candidates; about a fifth of first attempts ended in a fail.
The number of initial exams given each year is in the table. The statistics report the rates without explaining why they moved, so we do not guess at a cause.
Degree and result
The 2025 report splits first-time results by the program a candidate finished: DNP graduates passed at 88%, master's graduates at 80%. It is a description of who passed, not proof that one degree prepares you better; the report does not control for anything else.
Why there is no passing percentage
A standard-setting study fixes the cut score, and results are never expressed as a percentage, so “what percent do I need” has no answer. Older prep material quotes a passing score of 500 on the 200–800 scaled score described in the 2023 handbook. The current handbook prints no scale, so treat that figure as history.
Because only 135 items count, a question you found impossible may have been an unscored pretest item.
From the testing room to the official result
At the center: preliminary result on screen, made final once your documents are verified; letter and certificate timing are in the table. A preliminary pass is not yet the credential, so wait for the official release before you tell an employer or a state board.
How hard is it, in numbers
The fairest measure is the first-time pass rate: about four in five in the two most recent years. After a fail you reapply once the official score is out, up to 3 per calendar year, each at the full fee (cost). Comparisons with ANCC's family exam are on AANP vs ANCC, and the psychiatric exam's figures on PMHNP-BC pass rates.

Scores and attempts, quick answers
What score do you need to pass the AANP FNP exam?
None is published as a percentage. A standard-setting study fixes the cut score, and you receive pass or fail.
Is the FNP-C harder than the ANCC family exam?
Pass rates of the two boards are compared, year by year, on AANP vs ANCC. The exams also differ in length and in whether professional-role content is tested.
How many times can I fail the family exam?
Up to 3 per calendar year, counted January to December, and each try costs the full fee.
Will I know my result before I leave Prometric?
Yes, provisionally. The board confirms it later, after checking your documents.
