AANP recertification, the NPCB way
Updated Nov 7, 2026
Every NPCB credential lasts five years, and there are two ways to keep it: document practice hours and continuing education, or pass the exam again. The rules are the same for FNP-C, AGNP-C, PMHNP-C and ENP-C, with the hours counted in the role you hold. AANP membership only changes the fee.
The four NPCB credentials

Route 1: practice hours and CE
Inside the current five-year period (FNP Renewal Handbook, June 4, 2026, PDF p. 7):
- At least 1,000 practice hours in your NP role. Direct patient care counts, and so do administration, education and research in the role; telehealth, volunteer practice and clinical supervision of NP students may qualify. Your own student clinical hours do not.
- At least 100 continuing education contact hours at the advanced practice level, 25 of them in advanced pharmacology.
- A current, active US nursing license.
Academic coursework can also count toward the CE hours.
Precepting NP students
Preceptor hours turn into non-pharmacology CE on a sliding scale, from 5 CE for 21–25 hours up to the cap: 120 or more preceptor hours count as 25 CE, and no more than that can be applied in one period (handbook, PDF p. 10). They never replace the 25 pharmacology hours.
Route 2: the exam again
Send a renewal-by-examination application; once it is approved, book a seat and pass while the credential is still current. No practice hours or CE are needed on this route (PDF p. 7). It costs the same as an initial exam, $315, or $240 for AANP members.
Expired, retired and verified
- Expired: once the date passes, the NP-C letters may not be used. Renewing after expiration starts with an email to NPCB (PDF p. 6).
- Retired: a status added in 2026 for NPs who leave practice for good; it does not allow using the credential for practice (PDF p. 6).
- Verification after renewal comes from NPCB itself, free for state boards of nursing (PDF p. 14); see the NPCB page.

NPCB recertification questions
How many CE hours do I need to renew an AANP certification?
100 contact hours over five years, including 25 in advanced pharmacology, along with 1,000 practice hours.
What if I do not have 1,000 practice hours?
Renew by examination instead: pass the exam again before your expiration date, with no hours or CE required.
Do PMHNP-C, AGNP-C and ENP-C renew the same way as FNP-C?
Yes. The same hour and CE minimums apply, with the practice hours counted in that role.
