An FNP review plan built on the 2024 weights
Facts read from aanpcert.org and 2 more · last checked Nov 7, 2026
Review courses and books are plentiful; what should decide the order is the 2024 blueprint. It puts 43 of 135 scored items in Assess and only 20 in Evaluate, and most of the patients are adults.

Task weights from NPCB's blueprint page. The age axis is in the exam facts table.
A six-week order of study
Six weeks is an example length; stretch each step if you have more time. Keep the sequence even if the calendar slips.
- Weeks 1–2, the high-volume adult systems: cardiovascular, endocrine, respiratory. Learn each condition in the four task steps: what you ask and examine, what you rule out, what you start, what you recheck.
- Week 3, the rest of adult primary care: GI, musculoskeletal, neurology, plus skin, kidney and EENT findings, which are covered in the Assess page's quiz.
- Week 4, older adults and prevention: older adults is the biggest age band, and screening items are about exact ages and intervals.
- Week 5, children and pregnancy at primary-care depth: well-child visits on CPNP-PC, prenatal basics on WHNP-BC. The family exam asks for first-contact care here, not specialist management.
- Week 6, mixed timed sets: the practice test, then the task page where your misses cluster.
Guideline editions to study from
NPCB does not say which guideline editions its items follow, so study the current ones and know the recent changes:
- Blood pressure: ACC/AHA 2025 high blood pressure guideline.
- Diabetes: ADA Standards of Care, revised every year; the 2026 edition is current.
- Asthma and COPD: GINA 2026 and GOLD 2026 reports (GINA updates each May).
- Screening: current USPSTF recommendations, checked recommendation by recommendation.
- Vaccines: the CDC adult immunization schedule for 2026.
- Older adults: AGS Beers Criteria, 2023 update.
- Infections: ATS/IDSA 2019 for community-acquired pneumonia; CDC guidance for STIs and TB testing.
If a review book predates one of these editions, check that chapter against the guideline itself.
Old weights still in circulation often wrong
Material written for the previous blueprint gives Evaluate a much larger share. In the 2024 blueprint it is 15%, and Assess has grown to 32%. Plan your hours on the current numbers.
Review books and courses, without a ranking
The names candidates search most are Leik's Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Intensive Review, Fitzgerald Health Education Associates, Hollier's APEA materials and Barkley & Associates. We have no tie to any of them and do not rank them. Two checks matter more than the brand: the edition must be newer than the 2024 blueprint, and the course should cover the four tasks rather than a disease list alone.
Question-style traps across the exam
- Initial versus definitive. “Most appropriate initial test” is often the cheap, quick one; the definitive test is a distractor.
- Office versus emergency department. A stem with unstable vital signs or a time-critical diagnosis wants a transfer, not an office workup.
- Adult defaults applied to children or pregnancy. Doses, screening ages and drug safety change; the population in the stem decides.
- Old guideline numbers. Screening start ages and first-line drugs have moved in the last few years; see the system pages.
- Answering a different task. If the stem asks what to assess, a diagnosis is the wrong kind of answer even when it is correct.

Planning FNP-C review, quick answers
Is Evaluate still a big part of the FNP-C?
Smaller than it was. It is 15% of scored items in the 2024 blueprint, the lowest of the four tasks.
Do I need to study pediatrics for the FNP-C?
Yes, in proportion. The age split is adults 78%, so roughly a fifth of scored items involve newborns through adolescents.
Which review book follows the 2024 blueprint?
Check the publication date and the table of contents: an edition from 2024 or later should list the four tasks with current weights. We do not recommend a particular book.
