Eligibility now and the rules announced for 2029

Today: Current US RN or APRN license and a graduate WHNP program (master’s, DNP or post-master’s) that meets NCC requirements, taken within 8 years of graduating. The transcript and diploma are checked before an application is approved.

Announced: From January 1, 2029 candidates must test within 5 years of graduating; graduates after December 31, 2029 need 750 direct patient care clinical hours. These rules take effect for later graduates and leave current certificants alone unless a credential lapses. The transition, including who can still register under the 600-hour standard and until when, is written up once for both of the board's nurse practitioner exams on NNP-BC eligibility; the WHNP-only allowance for telemedicine hours is in the table above.

Three answer choices, alphabetized

Of the 175, 150 count; the other 25 unscored pretest questions carry no label on screen, so give every item full effort. Each question is multiple choice with 3 options: one answer and two distractors.

Two consequences of the format row are worth practicing for. With three choices, eliminating one wrong option leaves a coin toss, so the work goes into ruling out the second. Because the options are sorted alphabetically, their position says nothing about the key. Lab values come in conventional units with SI in parentheses, and drugs carry generic and trade names (guide, p. 6).

Seat time is 3 hours, with no breaks, about a minute per question. Delivery is either remote, with a live online proctor, or at a PSI test center; how remote sessions work is on the exam page.

Results arrive in your online account

Timing: Nothing at the test site; NCC posts pass or fail to your online account in up to 15 business days, with a longer wait when a new form is in use. Your certification is dated by the official result, and the board does not give results by phone or email (exam page).

The pass line is a criterion-referenced ability score with no set percentage to pass. What that means, and the yearly pass rates, are on WHNP-BC pass rate.

Failing once: the 45-day wait

Retake rule: Wait 45 days after the test, then reapply with the full fee; at most 2 attempts in a calendar year, with no reduced retest price. Each retake starts from a fresh application, and the guide sets no lifetime limit on attempts (guide, p. 4).

Spend the wait on the score report: its descriptors show which reporting groups were weak. The costs of a second attempt in the same calendar year are worked out on cost.

Staying certified: the assessment comes first

Renewal is called maintenance here, and it repeats every 3 years: a free Continuing Competency Assessment, then an education plan of 15 to 50 CE hours. The assessment at the start of the cycle builds your education plan, which is why the number of required hours ranges so widely; continuing education taken before the assessment is not credited.

The maintenance fee is $100, lower when the hours come from the board's own courses. Opting out of the assessment changes both the hours and the fee (see the renewal row above).

Three checks for any prep material often wrong

Three things to check in any prep material against the 2026 guide: whether it mentions remote proctoring, that results arrive online in your NCC account, and that items have three options. The format row above has the option count, and the outline in use rests on the 2023 content validation study.

Questions about the rules

Is remote testing allowed for the WHNP-BC?

It is. Alongside PSI centers, a live remote proctor is available around the clock (testing methods).

Do I get continuing education credit for passing?

No. Passing the exam earns no CE hours (guide, p. 20); CE comes into play in the maintenance cycle.
